08 April 2020Faced with the emergency "we acted immediately with a sense of responsibility, putting the health of citizens first, which the Constitution, in Article 32, qualifies as a fundamental right. We have made difficult decisions, following criteria of proportionality and adequacy on the basis of the indications of the technical-scientific committee. We did it by confronting a virus of which very little was known. Even the scientific community has been displaced. Every decision has been made in science and conscience ". In an interview with L'Osservatore Romano and Vatican News, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte explains it. "But the time will inevitably come when we will be called to answer for our choices. I will not shirk, looking for alibis or shortcuts. But now is the time to act together and the collaboration of all, mayors and presidents of the Region included. ", points out.

"Confrontation with the oppositions"
Speaking of collaboration, the premier stressed the need for confrontation with the oppositions. "There is constant confrontation between the government and the opposition. We have asked citizens to be united, it is the duty of politics to set an example. We have to learn a lot from this period. At international level, many countries have shown their support for Italy, sending medical personnel, equipment, aid The Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, at the time of sending doctors and nurses to Italy, observed: 'Over there it has been our home since our Italian brothers have saved, hosted and adopted us in their home. "This spirit of solidarity, the need to support each other, makes us rediscover that we are - despite legitimate differences - a big family, without fences".

"Thanks to the Church for her sense of responsibility"
Regarding the celebrations of Holy Week and the Easter holidays, the Prime Minister said: "I understand the regret that the entire community of faithful feels in living a different Easter, far from the warmth and affection of loved ones, unable to participate to the celebrations of the Triduum, the culmination and center of the liturgical year, to which our people are so attached. We are aware of the great sacrifice we are asking of the faithful and pastors, forced to celebrate the rites of Holy Week sine populo ". And he added: "The Government, which has constantly and dutifully informed the Italian Episcopal Conference in every more delicate passage, is grateful for the sense of responsibility with which the Italian Bishops, under the guidance of Cardinal Bassetti, have accepted these measures, in the awareness of the supreme goods involved in this dramatic moment for the national community. But I am confident: we must hope that from this renunciation a fruitful season can arise, of which we will soon be able to reap the benefits, also on the spiritual level ".

"Proud of self-denial and solidarity in our country"
Then thanks to those on the front lines of this emergency. "I am proud and moved by the gestures of great self-sacrifice and generosity that we are witnessing in this sad period of our history. Also from here I want to say thanks to the doctors and nurses who are at the forefront of hospital wards. Thanks to the many doctors from the center and south who voluntarily left for the North to support colleagues in the trenches in the areas most severely tested by the virus. I would also like to thank those who, by continuing to work, have made it possible not to completely shut down the country's engine. Thanks also to the police, to the firefighters, to all those who do not like to be called heroes, but who at this moment deserve the gratitude of all of us '' underlines Conte.

'' Every day in our country there are small and large gestures that denote a strong sense of altruism, solidarity, spirit of self-denial. Gestures in which the Pope's message relives, which invited everyone not to think about what we are missing, but about the good we can do. Once the emergency is over, we can count on women and men who are more aware of the value of life and of the importance of giving more to others and to the community. I see a new spring for Italy '', he concludes.
