The marathon meeting of the Member States of the European Union ended in failure. The latter failed on Wednesday April 8 to find a common economic response to the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Pointed at, the Netherlands is said to have refused to give in to requests from the countries of the South.

The French Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, estimated that a failure would be "unthinkable" and hoped that the countries of the euro zone will find an agreement on Thursday.

"Incomprehensible"

"I don't want to point the finger at anyone because I think it would be totally useless and because I deeply believe (...) that our political responsibility is to reach an agreement within 24 hours, a failure is unthinkable", said Bruno Le Maire during the report of the Council of Ministers at the Élysée Palace.

"We will put (...) all of our weight in this battle to reach an agreement," he added, without pointing to anyone responsible.

The blocking of a decision on the European Stability Mechanism (MES) is "incomprehensible" and "cannot last," said a source in the French presidency. "This subject has been blocked by only one country, the Netherlands," said the source.
