Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a state of emergency yesterday in an attempt to contain new infections of the Corona virus in major population centers, and unveiled a stimulus package he described as among the largest in the world to alleviate the economic consequences.

Abe declared a state of emergency in the capital Tokyo and six other provinces with about 44% of Japan's population for about one month.

"We have decided to declare a state of emergency, because we have seen that the rapid spread of the Coruna virus across the country will have a tremendous impact on lives and the economy," Abe told parliament earlier.
