The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 75,500 people worldwide. Almost three-quarters are in Europe with Italy, then France and Spain at the top of this macabre balance sheet. In the United States, the balance sheet is racing and exceeds 11,000 deaths.

The Europeans had hope this weekend with a sign of a decline in the deaths recorded in Spain and Italy but this trend was not confirmed on Tuesday April 7. The daily toll rose again in Spain with 743 dead in 24 hours. Same inversion of curve in Italy. Despite everything, the number of new hospitalizations is stalling in several countries, including Spain and France.

  • France exceeds 10,000 dead

It's been three weeks since the inhabitants of France have been locked up at home. France passed this Tuesday, April 7, the barrier of 10,000 coronavirus deaths, registering an additional 607 deaths in the last 24 hours in a hospital environment, the highest daily figure since the start of the epidemic, said the director general of the health. Since the beginning of March, 7,091 deaths have been recorded in hospitals, and 3,237 in retirement homes, for a total of 10,328 deaths, said Jérôme Salomon in a daily update, explaining that the epidemic continued " its progression ”.

France is not yet at the " peak of the epidemic ", hammered the Minister of Health Olivier Véran . He added that " confinement will last as long as it takes ." For his part, the Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner asked the prefects " to examine on a case-by-case basis the need to tighten the measures ". In Paris, for example, any individual sporting activity is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. from this Wednesday.

In the United Kingdom , the British Prime Minister is on Tuesday in stable condition in an intensive care unit in London. He needed an oxygen supply due to the deterioration of his health caused by Covid-19. Experts say the UK is currently entering its deadliest week since the start of the epidemic, which has claimed 5,000 lives in all.

Like the United Kingdom, Sweden initially opted for more flexible measures than those practiced in the majority of European countries. But more than 100 people died of the Covid-19 in 24 hours, according to a count Tuesday at 12:00 GMT. In total, the country has recorded 7,693 cases and 591 deaths. Much higher mortality than that observed among its neighbors.

Its Norwegian neighbor believes that it has halted the spread of coronavirus on its territory. The containment measures should therefore be eased from April 20, notably with the reopening of nurseries and the lifting of the ban on stays in second homes. A week later, the country should proceed to a partial reopening of colleges, high schools and universities. The Prime Minister displayed “ cautious optimism ” asking the population to continue to respect the measures still in place and warning that these announcements were reversible in the event of a renewed epidemic.

  • Europe is trying to mobilize

European finance ministers sought Tuesday to overcome their differences on a recovery plan after the coronavirus epidemic. This meeting is a decisive test for the unity of the Twenty-Seven, already criticized for their division. Measures have been announced, they represent more than 500 billion euros. Discussions should, however, continue on the idea of ​​issuing joint debt. The Netherlands, Germany and other states such as Finland are opposed to this mutualisation, while the countries of the South most severely affected are demanding the creation of its "coronabonds".

For her part, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced a plan of 15 billion Euros to help the most vulnerable countries in Africa and in the rest of the world to fight against the pandemic.

  • 11,000 dead in the United States

The United States has passed the 11,000 dead mark, more than half of which in New York State. In just 24 hours, the state most affected by the coronavirus recorded 731 deaths, a sad record. Governor Andrew Cuomo still hopes hospitalization will stabilize. The state is even reaching a plateau for the total number of hospitalizations.
