Germany wants to impose a 14-day quarantine on all travelers returning to the country after a stay abroad, said a spokesman for the Interior Ministry on Monday. It is a recommendation made at the end of a council of ministers devoted to measures related to the coronavirus pandemic. It was addressed to the 16 regional states which, federalism obliges, take the decision of last resort.

It should enter into force on April 10 and concern Germans and nationals of a State of the European Union. However, this quarantine of travelers could cause dissatisfaction in certain border regions such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern where many Polish doctors work in hospitals in the region.

70,000 people turned back at the borders

Since March 16, Germany has imposed drastic controls on its land borders with France, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Denmark in an attempt to limit the spread of Covid-19. According to a spokesperson, 70,000 people have been driven back to the borders since the implementation of this measure.

In addition, over the past 20 days, the country has repatriated 220,000 Germans who were abroad. In Germany, the Covid-19 had killed more than 1,400 on Monday.
