In recent days, SVT has reported how coronas infection is spreading in a large number of elderly homes in Stockholm and other parts of the country.

Anders Tegnell, state epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency, says that the spread of infection in elderly homes is one of the biggest problems linked to the pandemic in Sweden right now.

- This is a major concern and a big reason for the increasing death toll we are seeing in Sweden today. When I talk to my Nordic colleagues, they do not have the same problems there, he says.

If it is just a matter of time or if they are better at protecting their elderly homes, Tegnell remains to be seen.

Last Saturday, SVT could tell that the corona virus was found in 100 elderly homes in Stockholm County and that at least 406 of the elderly there were infected. An employee at one of the residences in Stockholm testifies that there is great concern among both residents and relatives.

Possibility of sick leave

He also says that the staff's conditions are crucial to preventing the spread of infection.

- It is important that staff are given the opportunity to be at home if they have the slightest symptoms, he says and continues:

- It is important that everyone involved goes back to their businesses and thinks about what they can do even better.

He says that the authority is working with the regions to create better testing opportunities for the elderly.
