Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has proposed Monday to declare a state of emergency due to the increase in coronavirus cases.

The official provision will allow local authorities to ask their citizens to avoid leaving their homes if it is not necessary or to require companies and institutions to remain closed.

This state of health alert does not have an extension at the national level, but its measures will be applied promptly and according to the case by the local authorities as they deem appropriate.

The Japanese archipelago has experienced a 220% increase in the spread of the new coronavirus since March 24.

Then there were 1,140 confirmed cases of coronaviruses in Japan (not including those of the Diamond Princess cruise ship), while the Ministry of Health figure as of Sunday was 3,654, of which around a third are concentrated in and around Tokyo.
