France has counted 8,078 people who have died from COVID-19 since the start of the epidemic, the Directorate General for Health (DGS) announced on Sunday 5 April. Some 5,889 people died in hospitals and 2,189 in nursing homes and other medical and social establishments.

This represents 357 more hospital deaths in the past 24 hours, the DGS said in a press release. The first reports on medico-social establishments, including retirement homes, began to be published on Thursday.

This number of deaths in hospitals is the lowest recorded this week. In addition, a major indicator is decelerating: the DGS has 140 more resuscitation entries since yesterday, a balance "which remains positive but is gradually reducing", according to the press release, bringing the number of patients in intensive care to 6,978.

However, the DGS warns that all of the data "confirms that the epidemic is continuing in our country and continues to hit hard," says the text.

In total, 28,891 people are hospitalized because of the Covid-19, or 748 people more than on Saturday, and this "taking into account the departures which are more and more numerous". Since the start of the epidemic, more than 16,000 people have been cured out of the hospital, says DGS.

In addition, 47 patients were "transferred from the most stressed regions to the least stressed regions" this Sunday, bringing the total number of transfers of patients in serious condition to 613 people.
