• Arcuri: "The battle is not won, there is no return to normal"

April 04, 2020 400 thousand protective masks per day, 320 prisoners at work, 8 technologically advanced machinery, 3 production plants located within as many penitentiary offices. This is the project for the industrial production of protective masks created in partnership between the extraordinary government commissioner for the Covid-19 emergency and the Ministry of Justice-Department of Prison Administration.

The production will primarily satisfy the need for protective devices supplied to staff working in penitentiary institutions throughout the country, to prisoners based on the indications of the health authorities and will make it possible to make available to Civil Protection the abundant residual part for be distributed to other administrations committed to dealing with the health emergency, first of all hospital structures.

'' It is a large industrial project that was born in a moment of particular national emergency - underlined the Minister of Justice Alfonso Bonafede - in which everyone is making the maximum effort to deal with the spread of the contagion from Covid-19. Thanks to the professionalism of all the operators of the Prison Administration, with the collaboration of the Extraordinary Commissioner Arcuri, the prisoners will also make their contribution in this emergency ''.

The first six machines, which will be purchased by the Extraordinary Commissioner structure and granted free of charge to the Penitentiary Administration, will arrive in mid-April and will be located in the three industrial plants identified at the Milan Bollate and Salerno institutes and at the Polo di Roma Rebibbia at the Armament and Clothing Supply and Distribution Service (Sedav). The last two orders will be executed shortly.

On each machine, capable of ensuring the production of 50 thousand pieces per day, 40 inmates will work in four shifts of six hours each. They will be selected on the basis of their personal skills and professional aptitudes and will be adequately trained in the use of the machinery and regularly contracted and paid, with wages paid by the Prison Administration.

The production cycle will also include the reception and preparation of the non-woven fabric (TNT), as well as the storage and sanitization of the masks.
