"My thoughts are with the victims of the Romans-sur-Isère attack, the injured, their families," he wrote on his Twitter account while France is already facing the coronavirus pandemic. "All the light will be shed on this heinous act which comes to mourn our country already hard hit in recent weeks".

In constant contact with the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior

Arrested around 11 a.m., the alleged perpetrator, who presents himself as a Sudanese refugee, attacked several people in a bakery, a tobacco shop and on the street, AFP learned from a source close to the investigation.

The head of state "was warned at around 12 noon by the Minister of the Interior" Christophe Castaner, said his entourage. Emmanuel Macron is "in permanent contact with the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior", who planned to visit the site in the afternoon.

"We do not yet know the motivations for this attack," said the Romans town hall in a statement, adding that the injured are "in absolute emergency".
