Maryland State authorities announced the loss of two members of the Kennedy family, one of them the niece of the late President John Kennedy, on Friday after they went on a rowing boat trip, in another tragedy hitting the most famous political family in the United States.

Larry Hogan, governor of this state neighboring Washington, told a news conference that Mayf Kennedy McCain, 40, and her son Gideon, 8, did not return Thursday from a trip to Chesapeake Bay.

"There has been extensive research since last night in cooperation with the police, the Coast Guard and the paramedics," he added.

For its part, the US Coast Guard said on Friday that it had suspended the search for two members of the Kennedy family who had been missing in Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the United States because none had been found.

On Friday, a statement said that the US Coast Guard received a report "seeing two people trying to return to shore in a boat" near Hering Bay, 16 km south of Annapolis, Maryland, and was "not seen again".

"NBC", citing a statement from the Maryland Water Resources Police, said that preliminary investigations revealed that the two people may have boarded the boat to the Gulf to retrieve a ball and were unable to return to shore.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that its agents searched for a distance of 5887 km from the air, sea and land for 26 hours.

Former Maryland governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, McCain's mother, said in a statement that her daughter had devoted her life to helping vulnerable people in society.

"With deep sadness, I inform you that the search for my beloved daughter Maif and my grandson Gideon has been transformed from the process of saving them to recovering them," she added.

At a press conference, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said, "On behalf of the people of Maryland, I express my deep sympathy for her and her family at this difficult time."

And Maif is the daughter of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the eldest daughter of former Justice Minister Robert Kennedy, brother of President John Kennedy who was assassinated in 1963.
