The seriousness of the situation that Spain is going through due to the expansion of the coronavirus, added to the economic crisis that is raging in the country, is leading political parties to promote initiatives to donate a part of public wages to the fight against Covid-19 . At the moment they are their own initiatives that each formation launches without a consensus among all the parties to tackle a common and unitary proposal. United Podemos also encourages this donation to be undertaken. Specifically, the purple formation asks the Congress of Deputies and the Government that all deputies and senior officials donate 50% of their salary to fight the coronavirus. Its novelty is that it includes the members of the Executive, not only the deputies. The training has five chairs in the Council of Ministers.

The United Podemos proposal, which has registered a non-legislative proposal in Congress, contemplates that the Government reduce 50% of the total remuneration (base salary and all supplements) of all its members. "That will also affect the undersecretaries, general directors and the rest of high positions of the administration and its public companies like RTVE", explains the training. A reduction in salary that he also asks is undertaken, in the same measure, for the deputies while the state of alamar lasts.

Government salaries

President: 84,845 euros

Vice-presidents: 79,746 euros

Ministers: 74,858 euros

* In the case of the 17 members of the Executive with a deputy act, to this must be added 917 euros per month (almost 13,000 per year) for those elected in Madrid and 1,921 euros (almost 27,000 euros per year) for the rest, in concept compensation granted by Congress to "meet the costs arising from the activity of the Chamber."

"If we are asking for sacrifices from all citizens, public officials should be the first to set an example. This is because everyone must shoulder their shoulders and be at the height of the historical moment that we have had to live", has explained Jaume Asens, president of the parliamentary group of Unidas Podemos. "The savings obtained from this package of salary reductions will be reintegrated into the public coffers to fight against the Covid-19, as well as to support the demands of the health sector."

The proposal of Unidas Podemos indicates that the undiscounted amounts from the previous days and already accrued would be discounted from future payrolls.

The purple ones justify their proposal in the need to "set an example", while they argue that the deputies of Unidas Podemos "are already making donations of their salary. They do it throughout the year, since they have an ethical code with which their positions reduce their salaries and donate a good part of the surplus to social projects. "
