There was no longer any real suspense since Edouard Philippe had declared his preference for continuous monitoring. Given the ongoing coronavirus epidemic which does not guarantee "absolute" written tests, the Minister of National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, has therefore only confirmed what everyone foresaw by announcing, Friday, April 3, the elimination of the final exams for the 2020 baccalaureate and an evaluation via the marks obtained throughout the school year. The examination of the college patent is also concerned.

"We wanted to guarantee that everyone can take the exam but also guarantee fairness and quality, in particular through attendance and motivation", underlined the minister during a press conference.

Continuous monitoring will take into account the three quarters of the year, with the exception of the scores obtained during confinement.

It is the "simplest, safest, fairest solution in the difficult times we live in," he added, assuring that the goal was to ensure that neither , 1 million candidates is not harmed.

Addition of attendance control

In detail, the final obtaining of the certificate as of the baccalaureate will be conditioned, among other things, by an "attendance control", the mark of the written test of the French baccalaureate in first will be the average of the marks obtained by the student while throughout the year in this matter.

The French oral test is maintained and will be organized at the end of June-beginning of July but with fewer texts required than expected. The remedial oral exams for the final year students will be held as every year in early July. The school year will end on July 4.

Creches, schools, colleges, high schools and universities have been closed in France since March 16 in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus which has so far caused nearly 5,400 deaths and led the executive to take drastic containment measures.

In view of the many "uncertainties" on the "date of return to normal", the scenario of a return in progress on May 4 is only "a hypothesis", underlined Jean-Michel Blanquer.
