A man was sentenced Wednesday in Paris to one year in prison without warrant, and a fine of 10,000 euros, in a case of illegal resale of protective masks against the coronavirus, a judicial source said Thursday. This is the first conviction in a case of this type in the capital. In total, around fifteen investigations were opened by the Paris prosecutor's office for similar facts.

The investigation which led to the conviction on Wednesday was initiated last weekend and made it possible to seize some 20,000 FFP1 and FFP2 masks from an individual in the 19th arrondissement, who was selling them on the street. He was on trial for "deceptive marketing practices" and "refusal to submit to an administrative requisition".

Previously, the manager of a travel agency in the 13th arrondissement of the capital, in which about 20,000 masks were seized, had been presented on March 21 in court in immediate appearance but she had obtained a deadline to prepare her defense. She is due to be tried on April 21.

From the beginning of March, the government, criticized for the shortage of protective masks in the country, gradually requisitioned stocks (as well as future French production) of protective masks in order to guarantee their availability in the face of the epidemic of Covid-19, especially for professions potentially most in contact with the virus.
