La Poste announced on Wednesday that it would increase the frequency of its deliveries, from a rate of three deliveries of mail per week to four. A decision made for the delivery of newspapers which were directly impacted by the reduction in routes.

Round trips to the mailbox will soon be more frequent. "La Poste is strengthening its organizations to better meet the expectations of its customers," the postal operator announced on Twitter on Wednesday. For the past two weeks, La Poste had reduced its weekly mail deliveries to three (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), due to the coronavirus pandemic. But as of next week, the postman will no longer pass three times, but four.

An agreement with the press owners

It is above all the dissatisfaction of the press owners who is at the origin of this about-face. Indeed, the reduction in the frequency of mail delivery had a direct impact on newspaper delivery. End of concern, the headlines have reached an agreement with La Poste. Its president, Philippe Wahl, notably admitted having "made a mistake" by abandoning a "four-day" tunnel without distributing newspapers. He also said he now wants to go on the counter-offensive with a gradual redeployment of his activity.

From then on, the Post took the decision to move to a frequency of four days of distribution: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, but also Monday for newspapers in one half of France, and Tuesday in the other half. While this new pace will improve the distribution of newspapers, that of conventional mail will remain somewhat disrupted.

3,000 additional postal workers

To meet this demand, 3,000 additional postal workers will be mobilized from April 6. Most of them are employees of Médiapost, a La Poste subsidiary normally responsible for distributing printed advertising material. An activity for the time being completely stopped taking into account the context of health crisis.

The CEO of the Post, however, refuses to "police the package" when some call to refuse shipments deemed non-essential. Philippe Wahl prefers to appeal "to the responsibility of customers and shippers", given the current circumstances. Compared to normal, parcel volumes were, last week of March 30, about 15% that of the usual volume, the decline being for conventional mail "a little less than 50%", he said. added.
