The inspiration comes from Singapore who used the same technological means to curb the spread of infection in the country, Reuters writes.

The app that Germany may be launching would alert people if they have been near a person who has been confirmed to be infected. The distance the app will respond to is two meters and the meeting should be longer than 15 minutes, the BBC writes.

- Integrity will be respected as no personal data or location information will be used and no data will be stored for longer than 21 days, says Thomas Wiegand at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute involved in the app project, to Deutsche Welle.

Launched after Easter

Several European countries are working together to create this app, and in Germany it can become a reality already after Easter. The German government sees the app as promising and welcomes cross-border cooperation, according to an assistant spokesperson.

The prerequisite is that the Germans are allowed to download it on a voluntary basis and the privacy must be protected by the app picking up the bluetooth signal, no other data mobiles.

At least 60 percent

However, to get the effect you want, at least 60 percent of the population needs to download the app, which means about 50 million people, according to the German government.

In addition to EU countries, Russia and the UK are also looking at similar resolutions.
