02 April 2020 Fourteen doctors and health professionals are the first martyrs in the fight against the new coronavirus. In a note, the provincial government said that identification took place in line with the country's rules on the recognition of martyrs. Martyrdom is the highest honorary title that the Party and the country give to citizens who bravely sacrifice their lives for the nation, society and people.

Among them, Li Wenliang, the 34-year-old ophthalmologist who passed away on February 7 after contracting the virus, and among the first to perceive a link between Wuhan's anomalous pneumonia and SARS of 2003. Instead, he ended up being reproached by local police because of the "spread of false information on the internet".

The 14 martyrs are Wang Bing, Feng Xiaolin, Jiang Xueqing, LiuZhiming, Li Wenliang, Zhang Kangmei, Xiao Jun, Wu Yong, Liu Fan, Xia Sisi, Huang Wenjun, Mei Zhongming, Peng Yinhua and LiaoJianjun. They have been described as excellent behavior patterns for frontline physicians and epidemic prevention practitioners.
