  • Italy: 837 dead in a day, but infections continue to fall

The Italian Interior Ministry said yesterday that children can go for a walk accompanied by a single parent and in the vicinity of their homes, after requests to grant that minors could go out despite the isolation measures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, Interior pointed out that regarding permission to go for a walk or run close to home, minors may also do so while accompanied by a parent and in the vicinity of home.

The Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family, Elena Bonetti; the undersecretary of Health with responsibility in medicine for children and adolescents, Sandra Zampa, and the president of the Italian Society of Pediatrics (SIP), Alberto Villani, had written just today a letter to the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza presenting the problem of not allow children to leave the house.

"We have shared with Minister Speranza the need to allow all people of developing age, that is, minors between 0 and 18 years old , to be able to carry out physical and recreational activities outdoors, but always accompanied by a family member , respecting the social distance ".

Although he assumes that respect for the rules of isolation has saved many lives, he also adds that "rules must be proposed to accompany them gradually at this time, protecting their fundamental rights along with their health and that of the community."

For three weeks, Italy decreed the isolation of its population due to the pandemic, which has caused 12,428 deaths and 105,792 infected, and it is only allowed to leave the house to buy basic necessities or for health or work reasons.

People were allowed to take a walk near their homes, but alone, which excluded being able to go out with their children.

For this reason, for several days associations of psychologists, educators and parents in Italy have been asking the Government to also take into account children, who have been forced to stay locked up at home for three weeks (one month in the north of the country) to avoid the spread of coronavirus, and allowed them to go outdoors for at least an hour.

The magazine "A pediatrician as a friend" (UPPA) had launched an appeal and a collection of signatures to ask the Government to take into account "the needs of children and that the situation of prolonged isolation in which they live carries risks that cause , and in some cases it is already causing, problems that compromise the health and well-being of the youngest "

"We express great concern that children have no chance of going out, contrary to what happens, for example, with pets, who have the right to meet their physiological needs outside the home," adds the note.

Lombardy experts, psychologists, parents, artists and educators also wrote a letter to the region's president urging the authorities that the children also be allowed to leave their homes for an hour.

"Children and young people are forced to remain locked within the walls of their houses 24 hours a day, often in very small apartments , often shared with many family members, and this, as noted by the Pediatricians and psychologists, in the long run, can do a lot of damage to your physical and mental health, "they wrote.
