01 April 2020 He goes to the hospital for Coronavirus and finds a tumor that obstructs the trachea and bronchi almost entirely. A young patient was saved from a non-invasive operation in rigid bronchoscopy and Ecmo support, thanks to the Pneumology and Resuscitation teams of the Molinette hospital of the City of Health in Turin.

This is the first case in the world in which this procedure was performed in a positive Covid patient with all the difficulties related to the need to reduce the spread of the infection in the environment and among operators.

The young patient showed up last Monday in the Emergency Room of the Cirie hospital. Positive to coronavirus, it presented a very serious picture of respiratory insufficiency, which required urgent intubation. To prevent mechanical ventilation a tumor mass of 2 centimeters, which obstructed the trachea at 90-95%.

After being transferred to San Giovanni Bosco, a resuscitation team was set up, coordinated by Dr. Sergio Livigni of the Giovanni Bosco hospital in collaboration with the staff of the City of Health in Turin, who proceeded to connect the patient to extracorporeal circulation (Ecmo) and to transfer the patient to the reference Resuscitation of the Molinette hospital, directed by Luca Brazzi.

Here, an emergency procedure was performed to free the trachea and bronchi involved in the disease, with the use of rigid bronchoscopy, while extracorporeal circulation guaranteed adequate support for respiratory failure caused by Covid infection .

The non-invasive intervention was performed, under a safety regime for the operators, at the University Resuscitation, by Paolo Solidoro, bronchoscopist of the Molinette University Pneumology directed by Carlo Albera of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Department, directed by Mauro Rinaldi, with the supervision of Rosario Urbino assisted by the anesthesiological team formed by Chiara Bonetto and Ivo Verderosa and professional nurses Barbara Picco and Mario Viale.
