The White House affirmed that US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed today the need for a ceasefire in Syria and Libya during the Coruna epidemic.

The White House said in a statement that the two presidents spoke by phone about efforts to "eliminate the virus and support the global economy."

He added that the two leaders "agreed that it is more important now than ever for countries witnessing conflicts - especially Syria and Libya - to adhere to the ceasefire and work towards a solution."

It is noteworthy that the Syrian government has so far only reported a few cases of coronavirus, but health experts warn that the country - torn by years of war - is particularly vulnerable to this rapidly spreading virus.

The Idlib region in the northwest of the country - which has witnessed violence that has displaced about one million people since last December - remains at greater risk of the epidemic.

As for Libya, its health care system has deteriorated greatly due to political instability, and the continued fighting between the internationally recognized forces of the national reconciliation government based in Tripoli, and between the forces loyal to retired Major General Khalifa Haftar.
