• Coronavirus. 37-year-old pregnant woman with coronavirus and her baby die in La Coruña

The association The Patient Ombudsman has requested the Superior Prosecutor's Office of Galicia to investigate the death of a 37-year-old pregnant woman infected with coronavirus and her baby at the Maternal and Child Hospital of La Coruña after undergoing an emergency caesarean section.

The association maintains that the coronavirus is a "now very comfortable excuse if there is something irregular", so it asks to investigate what happened in the hospital in A Coruña, since "it is possible that something irregular occurred that caused death during the caesarean section" .

The Galician Health Service reported the death on Sunday and explained that the woman had a previous chronic pathology, but the Patient Advocate does not agree with the explanations and asks: "Or now everyone who dies is due to the virus?" . "What has really happened?", They add, and they transfer their doubts to the Prosecutor's Office.

This woman, the first pregnant woman infected by Covid-19 who has died so far in Spain, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday as an emergency. During the operation in the operating room at the Teresa Herrera Hospital, the maternal and child center of the Hospital Complex of La Coruña (Chuac) with abdominal pain and a few tenths of fever. Until then, she had had a normal pregnancy and no suspicion of coronavirus.

According to what has transpired, they transferred her to the delivery room thinking that the delivery had been advanced and, when verifying that she had a fever, they tested her for the coronavirus. Soon after, they asked her husband for permission to do an emergency caesarean section. He died due to complications suffered during that intervention.

In childbirth the mother died and her baby was born dead. The Patient Advocate indicates that the reasons for death may not respond directly to the coronavirus, despite the fact that it has increased the statistics of fatal victims of this disease. "Hasn't anyone said that he had breathing problems, only that he had a fever, which may be the cause of other pathogens? Was he tested so quickly?" Asks the association.

Through a letter sent by the president of this entity, Carmen Flores, to the Superior Prosecutor of Galicia, Fernando Suanzes, the association argues that the family "has denied that it was positive", but that in any case, even if it were so, "Something we have not just explained" because "even if it was infected, it is not a reason for death precisely during the caesarean section, as well as the baby."

In addition, it draws attention to the fact that the result of the coronavirus test takes four hours and in some cases it must be repeated, so "how was it diagnosed so soon?" if the caesarean section was urgent. And it indicates that there has been no autopsy to corroborate it.

The group dedicated to the defense of patients throughout Spain also wonders if the baby was also diagnosed with Covid-19, because "until he is born he cannot be tested."
