Medical students reinforce healthcare: "Hard not to help"

Early in the medical education, you can work extra at health centers and hospitals, including as a nurse. But there is also a medical assistant service where you can perform administrative tasks in hospitals and assist with various interventions, for example intubate to put a patient in a respirator. According to the Swedish Medical Association Student, there are generally few medical assistants in Västra Götaland, and would like to see that the service was utilized more.

- We think it would be a great relief during the corona pandemic if the health care system uses it more than they do, says Elin Ekdahl.

There are no exact figures yet on how many students it is that help in healthcare, but according to the Swedish Medical Association Student, there have been indications that it has increased since the spread of the corona virus.

- Everyone wants to help in the way they can, and that probably applies to all terms.

The heavy burden of medical care due to the corona virus also means that future doctors risk not being able to do their internship. If universities do not succeed in finding substitutes, it may be difficult for many medical students to graduate.

- If we cannot show what we can and that we achieve the goals, we cannot come out and work this summer when we are needed. It can lead to as many as 2,000 fewer physicians this summer, and that is very bad, says Elin Ekdahl, medical student and vice chair of the Swedish Medical Association Student.
