DRC: debates on the measures to be taken to fight against the coronavirus in Kinshasa

After an announced and then canceled confinement, Kinshasa awaits further measures against the Covid-19 epidemic. Meetings are multiplying on this subject.

This Sunday, President Félix Tshisekedi again assembled a select committee to notably discuss the various options to limit the spread of Covid-19.

" At this stage, all options are on the table, " reports a source close to the Presidency of the Republic. All opinions were given by various experts at the level of the city hall of Kinshasa, the office of the Prime Minister and the entourage of the Head of State.

Some propose partial confinement , that is to say a measure which would only concern the commune of Gombe, the business center of the capital. The defenders of this position base their argument on the fact that most of the reported cases are located in this part of the city. This was also proposed during a strategic meeting led by Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba last week.

A decision expected this Tuesday

This option is being scanned by other experts, especially at the level of the provincial government of Kinshasa, who explain that the majority of the people who are in the Gombe district come from other municipalities in the capital. For them, the containment measure must concern the whole city and for several days.

For his part, Jean-Jacques Muyembe, head of the response against the coronavirus , estimated this Tuesday morning that it was still too early to decide on the form that a possible containment could take. " Anything can go fast by the end of the day, " he said.
