March 31, 2020 The 12-year-old girl who died Saturday in Belgium after being tested positive at Covid-19 is the youngest victim of Coronavirus in Europe. Last Sunday Portugal announced the death of Vitor, a 14-year-old boy with no particular conditions, while in France Julie, a 16-year-old teenager, died.

The girl who died in Belgium - according to local media reports - was originally from the city of Ghent.

"She was tested positive for Coronavirus. In three days her health deteriorated suddenly due to a severe fever and she passed away on Saturday," said one of the ministry health spokespersons, Steven Van Gucht, pointing out that she had no other pathologies. "It is an event that is very rare, but that upsets us," said another spokesman, Emmanuel Andre. "It is an emotionally very difficult moment because it touches a child and it also affects the medical and scientific community. We think in particular of his family and friends," added moved Andre.

The 12-year-old hadn't been to school since March 13th. Belgium decided on Monday 16 March to close school buildings because of the coronavirus. This was reported by the Belgian portal 7sur7, specifying that the city of Ghent is in a state of shock and that the information was initially confirmed by Elke Decruynaere, city councilor of education, then by the burgomaster (mayor, ed) of the city and finally by the school. Parents, teachers and students of De Harp Basic School were informed today via email.

"School staff and administration offer their condolences to relatives and are in close contact with the family to support them and do what is possible," said the institute, adding that the girl had not attended school since last 13. March and since then she no longer came into contact with the teaching staff or the other students.
