President Donald Trump extends the Social Distribution Guidelines across the United States until April 30. In doing so, he abandons his expert-criticized hope of being able to lift the country's closure for Easter.

When he spoke during the night to Monday, Swedish time, he was appalled at how quickly the virus has spread in New York, among other places. He specifically referred to all hospital deaths in his own home neighborhood in Queens.

- There are bags all over the hall, in the corridors. I've seen them bring in trucks, freezers. It's freezer cars because they can't handle all the bodies, there are so many. I've seen things I've never seen before, he says.

Faster pace than in Italy

It's completely different than it used to be when Trump downplayed the risks of the virus.

The death toll among those confirmed to be infected by the coronavirus has now risen to over 1,000 people in New York. And it has gone faster than in both Spain and Italy. In Spain, it took 18 days from the first death until the country had 1000 deaths. In Italy it took 21 days. In the state of New York, it only took 16 days.

"It's a horrible number"

US experts now say that 100,000 to 200,000 Americans can die from the virus. The president noted that it is good if the country manages to "keep down" the number of dead "to 100,000". He cited forecasts that said 2.2 million people could die if no decision had been made to shut down parts of society.

- That's a terrible number. But we've all done a very good job here, Donald Trump said.
