• Mexico.Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars in the United States

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, caused a stir in his country for having greeted Consuelo Loera, mother of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, this Sunday in Badiraguato, a city in the northern state of Sinaloa from which the imprisoned drug trafficker originates. in the United States, according to a video broadcast on social networks.

"I greet you, do not get off, do not get off. I already received your letter, yes, yes, I already received your letter, " says the president to Loera, who only replies "go, then" from a truck. In the video, which lasts about 20 seconds, some men lead the Mexican president to the vehicle where the drug dealer's mother is on a road in the state of Sinaloa, where López Obrador was on tour today.

The images have caused a stir because in the past Loera tried to communicate with López Obrador , who in February offered him help to process a humanitarian visa that would allow him to visit the kingpin in the United States, where he has served a life sentence since last July.

March 29 is the birthday of Ovidio Guzmán, son of the "Chapo" whom the Mexican authorities tried to capture in a failed operation on October 17, when the Sinaloa Cartel unleashed the violence in Culiacán to demand, and achieve, his release.

After the video was released, reporters approached López Obrador at the Culiacán airport to question him about the greeting to Consuelo Loera, to which he replied with a refusal with his finger. "See you tomorrow," he said, referring to his morning press conference.

The Mexican ruler also generated controversy last September when he applauded the "Chapo's" initiative to donate his wealth to indigenous communities.

In addition, López Obrador since February 2019 offered development programs for Badiraguato, with the additional objective of avoiding stigmatization of the municipality, which the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel considered as his home until his arrest, on January 8, 2016.

In fact, the reason for his visit this Sunday was to supervise the construction of a highway that will connect Badiraguato, in Sinaloa, with the population of Guadalupe y Calvo, in the state of Chihuahua, a road that crosses the Sierra Madre Occidental.

López Obrador published a video on Twitter in which he explained the project in front of the mountains, where it would later have been approached by men close to Consuelo Loera.

For that project, the president estimated a budget this year of 400 million pesos (16.9 million dollars) to which he hopes to add 800 million pesos (33.8 million dollars) within the next two years.
