After a record death on Sunday (838), Spain recorded a slight drop in the number of daily coronavirus deaths on Monday (812), authorities said.

Since the start of the pandemic, 7,340 people have died in Spain, the second in the world in terms of victims of the Covid-19 behind Italy.

The number of people healed on the rise

The country also has more than 85,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, nearly 6,400 more than Sunday. But the rate of progression of deaths and new confirmed cases in 24 hours has been slowing since the middle of last week in the country whose health authorities hope to be close to the peak of the epidemic.

The number of people healed from Covid-19 has also increased to almost 17,000. The Madrid region, where the authorities have set up a huge field hospital in the deserted pavilions of the trade fair and opened two morgues in an ice rink and an unused public building, remains the most affected in the country with nearly half of the dead .

Tough containment measures

The government of Pedro Sanchez decided on Saturday to tighten the measures taken to fight the Covid-19 by ordering all employees working in non-essential sectors to stay at home for two weeks.

The goal is to further reduce mobility and therefore the potential spread of the virus while the Spanish have already been subjected since mid-March to strict confinement which has been extended until April 11. Until now, they could only leave their home to work if teleworking was not possible, buy food, get medical treatment or get their dog out quickly.
