The wall was discovered when renovating the stone wall around the cemetery, which partially collapsed during the winter. At the excavation work, the remains of the brick wall under the stone wall were discovered.

- It's hard to say anything about the age of the wall at the moment, says Anders Franzén.

11th century monastery

If the wall is contemporary with the monastery, founded on the site in the 1140s, it has nearly 900 years on its neck. Now the county administrative board and the county museum will document the wall and what will then happen is unclear.

- We'll see if we leave it under the other wall or if it will be any other way. It's too early to say anything about it, says Anders Franzén.

According to Anders Wallander on the county administrative board, the wall may belong to the remains of old housing lines where the monks lived.

Stricter rules

Nydala Monastery is one of 17 Cicterian monasteries founded in Sweden in the 1100-1200s. The words were founded by Benedictine monks in France who wanted to return to the slightly more stringent rules that the Benedictine Order had when it was founded 600 years earlier. Therefore, the new monasteries were built in more deserted areas.
