The coronavirus pandemic continues to progress in the United States, the country with the largest number of officially reported cases in the world. The North American country has hit a sad new one-day death record, according to Johns Hopkins University counts.

The United States has experienced 453 Covid-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's death toll to 1,891 since the start of the pandemic. This is less than in Italy (10,023), Spain (5,812), China (3,299) or even France (2,317), according to the same count.

Johns Hopkins University counted 115,547 cases on Saturday at 6:55 p.m. GMT, or 21,309 new cases in one day (+ 23%), again a new record.

Towards 40 New York?

Now the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, New York State, which President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to quarantine, is by far the most concerned, with more than 50,000 cases alone, while remaining elusive on the exact scope of this measure.

"Some people would like New York to be quarantined because it's a hot spot," said Donald Trump when leaving the White House.

"New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places, some parts of Connecticut, I'm thinking about it," he added, as many jurists questioned the possibility even for the American president. to impose such a measure.

I am giving consideration to a QUARANTINE of developing “hot spots”, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. A decision will be made, one way or another, shortly.

"It would be for a short time," he said, saying he had a very good dialogue with New York state governor Andrew Cuomo.

Asked a few minutes later on this subject, the latter was nevertheless very surprised, saying that the question had never been raised during his morning telephone conversation with the American president.

"I don't even know what that means," he said, not hiding his perplexity.

Earlier in the day, the governor announced the postponement of the presidential primary in New York State from April 28 to June 23, as a precaution in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
