  • Congress. The Congress supports the state of alarm amid criticism of Pedro Sánchez's management: "This is not going well, it is not up to the task"

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Saturday, in an extraordinary appearance, the decision to paralyze from March 30 to April 9 all "non-essential" economic activities, that is, those that are not defined as essential in the decree of the state of alarm.

This will be approved this Sunday, in an extraordinary Council of Ministers. The affected workers will have during the eight working days -10 days of paralysis, including the weekend of April 4 and 5- that the measure includes a paid leave and will have to recover the lost hours of work gradually from the moment in the that the crisis is overcome.

Sánchez thus tightens the measures of the state of alarm by restricting economic activity to try to stop the spread of the virus and the accelerated transmission of infections.

The objective is to reduce mobility and social contact as much as possible to place it at weekend levels, when most non-essential industrial and commercial activities rest. The Prime Minister has specified that this decision will not affect the media sector.

The ultimate goal is to slow down the number of new infected and avoid the complete saturation of intensive care units (ICUs) of hospitals. The president has not ruled out having to take other measures over the next two weeks.
