After flight cancellations caused by the coronavirus pandemic, 1,5000 people, including a majority of Algerians, who had been stranded for several days at the main airport in Istanbul (Turkey), were placed in containment.
The passengers, including Tunisians and Jordanians, were transported by coach to a student residence in Karabük in northern Turkey for accommodation, reported the DHA news agency.
Over 2,000 cases of contamination in Turkey
These people were trapped at Istanbul Airport, the largest in the Turkish economic capital, as their country of origin banned flights from Turkey as part of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, the airport operator, IGA, announced that more than 1,000 Algerian passengers had been stranded there "for several days", adding that the Turkish government was trying to convince Algeria to allow the landing of flights.
Algiers has suspended since March 19 all its links with all European countries and several capitals of Africa and the Middle East. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu held talks with his Algerian and Tunisian counterparts on Wednesday, according to Ankara. Covid-19 has left 59 dead and 2,433 sick in Turkey, according to the latest official figures released Wednesday evening.
