DRC: Joseph Mukendi, former advisor to Etienne Tshisekedi, dies from coronavirus

Jean-Joseph Mukendi wa Mulumba, famous Bâtonnier and political advisor to Etienne Tshisekedi died on Tuesday March 24 in the morning. He is the third victim of the coronavirus in Kinshasa.

Jean-Joseph Mukendi was born in Bunkonde, in the former province of Kasaï, on April 6, 1946. Registered at the University of Liège, in Belgium, he returned to the Congo at the end of his training and joined the bar of Kinshasa in 1971. He became president of the bar from 1982 to 1985 and later president of the bar at the Court of Cassation. Jean Joseph Mukendi, a highly respected man, was also a consultant-expert at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

He was very close to Etienne Tshisekedi , historical opponent and father of the current president of the DRC, of ​​which he had been the political adviser. As such, he had played a major role in all mediations between Marshal Mobutu's camp and the opposition.

He was also the president of the collective of lawyers for the civil party in a flagship trial in 2010: the assassination of the two human rights defenders Floribert Chebeya and Fidèle Bazana. He was about 74 years old, while he was still a member of the UDPS.
