Guinea: several dead and wounded in clashes during the double ballot

Guinea experienced a referendum on Sunday March 22 and legislative elections tarnished by violence that left dead and wounded, according to the two camps. The opposition which boycotted these elections contested by the international community intends to block a possible third term of President Alpha Condé.

Ten dead, according to the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) for the single day of Sunday , four, according to the Ministry of Security including two in the violence and two others following an accident and by cardiac arrest, without further details.

The press release from the Ministry of Security adds that 9 agents of the Special Unit for Securing the Election, including 7 police officers, were seriously injured, while the FNDC announces that several dozen of its supporters have been shot.

This war of press releases comes on the evening of a double legislative and referendum poll desired and wanted by the authorities and contested by the opposition and the FNDC, which has experienced violence in several districts of Conakry and in certain provincial towns.

Protesters attacked the polling stations, ransacked then burned the electoral material in several cities of Middle Guinea and in neighborhoods of Conakry favorable to the opposition, according to the Ministry of Security.

Several individuals were arrested for disturbances of public order, possession and use of firearms, destruction of private and public property, fire, assault and battery and rebellion, the ministry said. While the FNDC calls on him to continue the demonstrations.
