Wildlife accidents with wild boars are increasing as the wild boar strain grows, and it also raises the requirement to be able to catch more search hunters with dogs with the ability to trace damaged wild boars which can be dangerous. But it is not always so easy to get hold of the search hunter in the event of an accident, as there are requirements that there should be two dog drivers with the right skills that are sent out at each accident and they should be able to set up at short notice.

- It is because it is more dangerous than searching for deer for example and that we have also had accident incidents where the dog driver gets injured, explains Erica Broström at the Police, which is the county manager for the National Wildlife Cycling Council Värmland.

Risky search

The search hunter and course leader Magnus Olsson attest to the seriousness of finding injured wild boars.

- Like damaged game, the wild boar is quite dangerous. They have a great deal of respect with dogs and people in that they have their pastures that they can harm people with.

Increase in accidents involving wild boar

Last year, wild boar accidents in the Värmland, Örebro and Dalarna police regions had increased from 328 the previous year to 387 and 68 of them were in Värmland, according to statistics from the National Wildlife Accident Council.

Special dog training courses are now required to look for damaged wild boars where dog characteristics are important. For example, they must not be too aggressive.

- We make the demand that they are sharpened, can work traceably and that they can also work loosely and set the boar so that the hunter can get there and can decide whether it needs to be killed or not, says Erica Broström
