Two weeks ago, 12 students from the Aniaragymnasiet in Gothenburg went to Malaga. There, internships awaited at, among others, a hostel and a beach club. But what would become a taste of everyday life in sunny Spain was quickly transformed into something else as the corona virus spread more and more in the country.

- It was just practice for a few days. We would have a good time here, but this is scary, says Alice Alfredsson.

Spain severely affected by the virus

Spain, after Italy, is the country in Europe most affected by the corona virus. A national emergency has been announced, closed borders, and curfew. The Gothenburg students only leave the hostel when they go shopping.

- Police officers go around and shout out information in megaphone. Almost every time you go out they come and sometimes they bark at one, says Emma Almén.

Troubled mood on the streets

The mood among the locals is uneasy, and if you happen to go too close to someone you will notice, says Emelie Drakbrink Folin.

- I've never been to strange people screaming at one, but so do people here, she says.

Flights to Gothenburg were canceled

The practice would have lasted six weeks, but now the focus is on getting home. The day before yesterday, high school students would have flown back to Gothenburg, but the departure was canceled. When SVT News West talked to the students on Thursday night, the plan was that they could come home during Friday night.
