Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Sunday that seven states in Venezuela, including Caracas, will be placed in "social quarantine" on Monday and that their inhabitants will have to remain confined to their homes, except for essential reasons, in an attempt to stem the spread of coronavirus.

From 5 a.m. (9 a.m. GMT) on Monday, the six million inhabitants of Caracas, as well as those of the States of Miranda, Vargas, Zulia, Tachira, Apure and Cojedes must remain confined to their homes, except to go to buy food or Maduro said in a televised address in the event of a medical emergency, adding that Venezuela now has 17 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus.
