The town hall of Marseille - Gérard Julien / AFP

  • The participation rate, as in many other places in France, is low in Marseille with 32.55%.
  • However given great favorite, Martine Vassal is finally neck and neck with Michèle Rubirola, candidate of the Marseille Spring, the left rally.
  • Also given a favorite, Stéphane Ravier (RN) won and finally slipped to third place.
  • Several candidates denounced massive fraud attempts.

Not a surprise, but surprises. Participation, as everywhere in France, is not really with 32.55% in Marseille, Covid-19 crisis requires, but the first estimates of the first round of municipal are. Starting with the breakthrough of the Printemps de Marseille, shoulder to shoulder with the favorite Martine Vassal of the Republicans. Another surprise, Stéphane Ravier of the National Rally would only be third. But difficult to make projections for the second round, with partial results and an election by sector.

Michèle Rubirola and Martine Vassal neck and neck

This is THE big surprise of this first round, Michèle Rubirola from Printemps Marseille is on the same level as the favorite Martine Vassal of the Republicans, with around 23% of the vote. The left coalition is making a historic breakthrough in a city led by the right since 1995. "These results are the clamor of hope that we hear for weeks on the street", welcomed Michèle Rubirola, calling Emmanuel Macron to do everything "so that the Marseillais can vote in peace, so that this change becomes a reality".

Ravier far from his hopes

The taste for defeat is bitter in Stéphane Ravier, elected mayor of the 13th and 14th arrondissements in 2014. Many, him first, predicted it at the head of the first round neck-and-neck with Martine Vassal. He finally tumbled to third place and could find himself a justice of the peace in the second round. “I am convinced that, as far as we are concerned, these announcements by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister [Saturday] contributed to making our electorate the most disciplined in the end and taking all the necessary precautions, including understood not to go to vote, "said Stéphane Ravier, who had however widely called to vote on his social networks all weekend.

With almost 70% abstention in #Marseille (above the national average of 10 points), it is impossible to maintain the second round. To continue these elections would be a democratic heist and a health madness! pic.twitter.com/n6CVmuFkkp

All municipal results

Fear of massive fraud

Many candidates expressed concern about incidents that occurred throughout the voting day on Sunday. Intimidation was denounced by the Printemps Marseille, but also by Bruno Gilles, as well as fraudulent proxies and soliciting in front of the polling stations. All the candidates, with the exception of Martine Vassal and Stéphane Ravier, were concerned about the presence of a loose leaf affixed to the report of the results which had to be taken to the centralizing office. Earlier in the afternoon, several men entered a polling station in the city of Felix-Pyat with Kalashnikovs. “Men entered a polling station with airsoft weapons. They fired but there were no injuries before trying to steal the ballot box, ”confirmed Dominique Laurens, public prosecutor of Marseille, to 20 Minutes .
