  • Migration: Mexico builds an invisible wall with the US

A 19-year-old pregnant woman from Guatemala died this week from the severity of her injuries, caused by falling from the border wall that separates the United States from Mexico, US and Guatemalan authorities reported.

The woman was identified as Mirian Stephany Girón Luna. Her baby, between seven and eight months pregnant, did not survive.

The Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) blamed human smugglers who had encouraged her to scale the wall and confirmed that they would work with the Mexican authorities to "find those responsible for bringing these lives are in danger. "

According to CBP, Girón, who was traveling with her partner, was taken to the border and abandoned there. They were both climbing the wall, when she fell, from a height of more than 6 meters. Her partner, who is believed to be the father of the baby, found Border Patrol agents and they called an ambulance.

Girón suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, a fractured pelvis, and lacerations of the liver and kidney. It came from the department of San Marcos, in Guatemala, near the border with Mexico. Her partner continues to be arrested by the Border Patrol.

According to sources cited by the Associated Press so far this year, at least seven Guatemalans have been injured trying to climb US border walls.

The United States has already built or replaced some 220 kilometers (135 miles) of the wall with Mexico. The coronavirus crisis has not prevented President Donald Trump in recent days from stating that the fight against immigration is one of his priorities. Last Tuesday he tweeted: "We need the wall more than ever!"
