For 16 years the role of a day like today, 11-M, was to remember the 192 people killed in the attacks in Madrid, which has so far been the largest jihadist massacre in Europe . And the acts in his memory multiplied in Madrid. But this year, the coronavirus has taken the leading role, which has caused the suspension of several of the central events in commemoration of the Atocha attacks and the restriction of those held.

Thus, the first to fall off the list was, perhaps, the most symbolic, the one that managed to bring together all the associations of victims: the concert organized by the Victims Foundation that the Kings preside every year at the Madrid Auditorium . On this occasion, following the sanitary recommendations to avoid acts with thousands of people, it was decided to celebrate it behind closed doors yesterday. Because it was expected that 2,300 guests attended, in addition to the Kings, who maintained their announced presence until it was decided to close the event.

The one that has taken place, although in a more restricted way, is the one convened by the Community of Madrid before the Post Office building, on the plaque of remembrance of those killed and those who gave everything to help the victims. There, the president of the community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, together with the representatives of the victims' associations, placed a wreath of flowers and kept a minute of silence. They were the president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism , Maite Araluce , the president of the Association of Assistance to Victims of 11-M , Ángeles Domínguez , the president of the 11-M Association Affected by Terrorism , Eulogio Paz , and the Vice President of the Victims Foundation, Ángeles Pedraza .

Affectionate greetings were avoided. The head movement and the smiles were enough. Some clueless still shook hands. In everyone's head, the preventive measures constantly pointed out by the health authorities.

The act of Atocha, which is celebrated after the end of the Community of Madrid, was also called off. The event was scheduled to be attended by the president of the 11-M Association Affected by Terrorism, Eulogio Paz, and the general secretaries of UGT and CCOO of Madrid, Luis Miguel López and Jaime Cedrún , respectively, and of the Union of Actors and Actresses Iñaki Guevara .

The closing of the day of remembrance has been celebrated in the Parque del Retiro, in the Forest of the Absent . At noon, the victims of terrorism have approached the Government to say that "not everything goes for an armchair" and that taking forward budgets does not justify agreeing "with the heirs of Batasuna -ETA", while they have indicated that they are still collecting data to be able to outlaw Bildu, as the president of the AVT, Maite Araluce, and the president of honor of the same association, Ángeles Pedraza, have transferred in speeches.

On March 11, 2004, jihadist terrorism placed bombs on commuter trains - in Santa Eugenia, El Pozo, Téllez street and Atocha station - that killed 192 people and injured more than 1,500.
