It was the most awaited punishment of the #MeToo era. Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Wednesday. Convicted of rape and sexual assault on February 24, the ousted producer faced between 5 and 29 years in prison. His lawyers had announced during the verdict their intention to appeal, believing that Weinstein had not been entitled to a neutral jury in New York.

Harvey Weinstein was convicted of the first degree sexual assault (under duress) of former production assistant Mimi Haleyi, for forced cunnilingus in 2006. In New York, this charge is punishable by at least five years in prison , and up to 25 years old. For the unrestrained third degree rape committed on apprentice actress Jessica Mann in 2013, he risked a maximum of four years in prison. Harvey Weinstein, on the other hand, had been exonerated of the two most serious charges, first degree rape of Jessica Mann, and of the aggravating circumstance of "predatory" behavior, which was punishable by life.

Indicted in Los Angeles

Hospitalized in late February and then incarcerated in Rikers Island prison, Harvey Weinstein should be transferred to another establishment in New York State by Wednesday evening. After the suicide of Jeffrey Epstein, the producer will be particularly watched. In December 2017, he said he was "suicidal," according to a draft email declassified by the court on Tuesday. "You deserve a reward for your immorality and your inhumanity for the acts you committed. I pray that hell exists because that's what you deserve, ”wrote brother Bob Weinstein two weeks earlier, who seemed to doubt his innocence.

The judicial soap opera is not over for Harvey Weinstein. In addition to his probable appeal, the producer was also charged in Los Angeles for two sexual assaults he is accused of having committed in 2013. The charges, which are punishable by 28 years in prison, could be the subject of a second trial in California.
