The LyondellBasell site in Berre-l'Etang near Marseille on July 14, 2015 - BORIS HORVAT AFP

The man who admitted to having caused a fire in a refinery near Marseille in 2015 and to the explosive attack of a factory in the Rhône and of ATMs, was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison.

Mathieu Boasso, a former journalist converted to brokerage in printing, saw his sentence accompanied by a two-thirds security measure by the Assize Court of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Explosion on National Day

He recognized all of the offenses that constitute what he calls his "epic", between 2012 and 2016: three armed robberies of 150 kilos of explosives in a warehouse and fifty detonators in two quarries, the explosive attack on six banknote distributors for overall loot of more than 58,000 euros, but above all the attack on a salted plant in Tarare (Rhône) and the LyondellBasell refinery in Berre-l'Etang (Bouches-du -Rhône).

On July 14, 2015, he placed an explosive device on three oil tanks, but only two were set on fire. The American company, number 3 worldwide in petrochemicals, estimated its damage at 18 million euros in damages, stressing that it took several years to "settle the consequences in terms of pollution of soil and water".
