Karim Tabbou will be released from prison on March 26. The leader of the Democratic and Social Union, an unregistered opposition party, will therefore remain behind bars for two more weeks, the time to serve all of his six months in prison since he has been in detention since September 26. latest. The sentence pronounced this afternoon is ultimately less severe than that required by the prosecutor who had asked for four years in prison, and 200,000 dinars fine.

Karim Tabbou is a figure in the protest movement against the Algerian regime. Justice criticized him in particular his calls to demonstrate, and his publications on social networks, going in the direction of popular claims.

" Tougher repression "

On the civil society side, the vice-president of the Algerian League for Human Rights, Saïd Salhi says he is " very surprised " by this condemnation. " It must be seen as a hardening of repression, " he explains. He denounced " a reversal of the situation " (...) when the Algerians " await an opening and measures of appeasement ".

Karim Tabbou's supporters were also there this Wednesday morning before the Sidi M'Hamed court. Several videos relayed on social networks showed dozens of people, chanting slogans of support for the opponent.
