Withdrawal of U.S. forces stationed in Afghanistan commences; security outlook uncertain 10:46 on March 10

US troops stationed in Afghanistan have announced that they have begun withdrawing approximately 13,000 troops deployed there based on a peace agreement between the United States and the rebels in the Taliban. The Trump administration wants to make a military withdrawal in preparation for the fall presidential election, but there is no prospect that local security will recover.

The United States and the Taliban signed the first peace agreement last month over a military operation in Afghanistan following the September 11 terrorist attacks, including the complete withdrawal of US troops.

A U.S. military spokesman stationed in Afghanistan issued a statement yesterday that it had announced that it had commenced withdrawal of approximately 13,000 troops deployed there based on the peace agreement.

The agreement says it will reduce U.S. troops to 8,600 within 135 days and completely withdraw the remaining units within 14 months of the agreement.
