The entrance to a courtroom in the Assize Court of Ille-et-Vilaine, in Rennes. - C. Allain / 20 Minutes

The parents of little Maëlyne are retried on appeal from this Monday before the Assize Court of Ille-et-Vilaine. Originally from Champagné in Sarthe, they are accused of having administered to their 13-month-old daughter "harmful substances which have resulted in death without the intention of giving it". On the night of February 27 to 28, 2015, the child died in the emergency department of Le Mans hospital after having ingested anxiolytics and antidepressants, says Ouest-France .

Before the investigators, the girl's parents had assured that she had absorbed a rest of rosé wine at the bottom of a glass left on a table during an aperitif. A thesis quickly dismissed since the toxicological analyzes carried out had revealed the presence of toxic dose drugs in the child's body.

No admission of both parents during the first trial

During the first trial, which took place before the Assises de la Sarthe in December 2017, neither of the parents had confessed, the father and the mother passing responsibility for the child's death.

The father was sentenced at first instance to 18 years' imprisonment while the mother was acquitted. The father's lawyers and the public prosecutor's office had appealed the decision. The verdict of the Ille-et-Vilaine assize court is expected on Friday.
