Neither teacher nor teacher: teaching staff. Neither husbands nor gentlemen, but medical or fiscala. The General Directorate of Educational Inclusion and the Department of Education, Culture and Sports have created a guide to favor the equal use of language in the school environment , where guidelines and recommendations are offered to advance the non-sexist use of language.

The Ministry details that it has detected " the sexist vice of the concealment of women in language " and to correct it proposes to name the two parties (girls and boys), use collective names (neighborhood, citizenship, teaching staff), neutral adjectives (neighborhood association , ministerial council) or the function instead of the position (direction, syndicate) instead of the comprehensive masculine of the two genders, or specify below and between commas, when it comes to women and men (of both sexes, both women as men, etc.)

The guide also recommends avoiding dissymmetric terms that have not developed the use of women as men, men or husbands, who have no female version or the apparent doublets in which the female term carries a negative assessment (greengrocer / greengrocer, fresh / fresh ...). It also indicates that it is necessary to avoid qualifications and insults that reinforce the idea that everything that is feminine is degrading, such as effeminate, soft or lazy.

As for the concordances, the guide bets on the use of the feminine in the first place followed by the masculine (the students enrolled in this course) and employ personal or pronominal forms of the verb as to whom it is interested, register, present.

Profession in women

The guide also affects professions and trades, where it still "sounds bad" to use terms such as "medical, carpenter or fiscala." The recommendation is “ when I am a woman, in a feminine, and when I am a man, in a masculine . When it comes to women and men as a whole, we look for comprehensive terms that are neither unequal nor asymmetrical », for example, teaching staff. “When we say it doesn't sound good, it's because it still doesn't sound. Let us repeat it so that it will normalize and stop sounding strange, ”encourage the guide's authors, Professors Elena Simón and Joana Pavia.

"As teachers, we have an obligation to leave aside expressions, syntactic and lexical constructions that indicate the supremacy of man and everything masculine," says the director general of Educational Inclusion, Raquel Andrés.

In addition, Andrés stresses that this new guide “is not only an instrument for teachers to be more aware of the need to make equal use of language, but it is also an opportunity to open reflection and debate among students ESO on the concealment and disregard of women in language , since everything that is not called does not exist and what is called evil exists badly ».

The guide will be presented next Monday, March 9 within the framework of the commemorative activities of International Women's Day and the event will also show experiences of educational centers concerning the promotion of equality in the educational field, such as CEIP Rosa Serrano de Valencia, IES Berenguer Dalmau de Catarroja and the FPA of Benissa.
