The World Health Organization has stated that countries should cooperate in fighting the emerging coronavirus instead of imposing travel restrictions on each other.

"It is extremely important for people to understand that these restrictions do not help (to improve the situation)," said Mike Ryan, WHO's emergency health chief executive, and his statement came after Japan and South Korea imposed restrictions on granting citizens of other countries visas.

Ryan stressed that travel restrictions should be imposed only after careful study based on scientific facts, and restrictions should not last for long periods at all.

For his part, the President of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Gebrysos, said: "The only way to overcome this virus is by joining us," adding that the number of cases worldwide is close to 100,000.
