A majority of French people (56%) consider that the National Rally can gain power, although a minority subscribes to its ideas or wishes a candidacy for Marine Le Pen in 2022, according to a study also showing that a majority of respondents would dissatisfied to see the RN manage their commune.

The share of French people who believe that the RN can come to power is up 9 points over a year, according to an annual Kantar Sofres-onepoint survey for Le Monde and France Info published on Friday.

This opinion jumped 15 points among supporters of the left (57%) and increased by 9 points among those of the party The Republicans (61%). It also advances by 5 points among those of RN (89%), and by 2 points among those of LREM (43%).

RN is also less perceived as a danger to democracy in France (51%, -4 points).

On the other hand, adherence to the ideas of the RN remains in the minority and does not progress (stable at 26%), remaining below levels before the presidential election of 2017.

In addition, almost half of French people do not want the president of RN Marine Le Pen to be a presidential candidate in 2022 (49%, -3 points), while a little more than a third wish it (35 %, +2 points).

The image of Marine Le Pen, who appeared strongly degraded in early 2018 and improved slightly the following year, still does not return to the levels of 2017.

The finalist of the last presidential election is "voluntary" for 68% of French people (-3 points) instead of 80% in 2017, and capable of making decisions for 51% (-1 point), after 69% in 2017.

The French remain in the minority to think that it "understands (their) daily problems" (39%, -6 points) instead of 49% in 2017.

And only 22% (+3 points) think that she would make a good President of the Republic, against 19% in 2019 (24% in 2017).

As the municipal elections approached, 54% of French people would also be dissatisfied if their municipality were headed by an RN mayor, more than for the other parties.

In the same ballot, where the RN supports candidates outside the party, including LR, only 23% of French people think that the RN and LR lists should "ally or merge" in the second round. On the other hand, 56% of RN sympathizers and 40% of LRs support this type of alliance.

The French are more likely (52%) to support the idea of ​​an alliance of opponents of the RN in the second round or of withdrawal from the best placed list.

Survey carried out from February 27 to March 2, 2020, among 1,000 people interviewed face-to-face at their home, according to the quota method. 3.1% margin of error.
