The current Gratte-Ciel district in Villeurbanne, before the extension of the project - C. Girardon / 20 Minutes

  • The conquest of Villeurbanne promises to be the most disputed between the left and the Greens, who have made this city one of their priorities.
  • LREM, marked by deep internal divisions, seems to be unhooked in a city that it has never been able to manage.

In Villeurbanne, often considered as the tenth arrondissement of Lyon, the succession of the socialist Jean-Paul Bret, who does not stand for mayor, promises to be the most disputed. The city will not have escaped its share of quarrels, as well on the left, as within LREM. Result: the games seem more open than ever less than two weeks before the first round of municipal elections.

The left in united march, the Greens go it alone

At 73, Jean-Paul Bret decided to hand over after three terms and 19 years at the head of the town hall. He places all his hopes in the candidacy of Cédric Van Styvendael, who was never elected. The forties, immersed in the deep end, benefited from the contacts of his mentor and managed to gather the forces of the left ... except for the Greens.

Making Villeurbanne one of their national priorities, the environmentalists decided to go it alone in the first round. After having long sat in the municipal majority and then displayed its differences, Béatrice Vessiller, 57, dreams of making the city fall into the hands of EELV. A bet that could prove to be a winner given the scores credited by the Greens in the various national polls.

Fratricidal war at LREM

The task seems, on the other hand, more complicated for the presidential party torn apart by a fratricidal war. The deep internal divisions could well weigh in the ballot. Tired of waiting for the nomination for the metropolitan elections, Bruno Bonnell, deputy for the sixth district, launched the charge. He threw himself into the battle without national support and allied himself with Emmanuelle Haziza, ex-candidate of the Republicans, having freshly slammed the door of his party, considered too "misogynist". It remains to be seen whether this new duo will succeed in convincing voters. Or if it will overshadow Prosper Kabalo, former first PS deputy and officially invested by La République en Marche.

In this socialist stronghold, the right could be satisfied with the crumbs. The Republicans, led by Clément Charlieu, will try to exceed the 10% mark. Which would allow them to stay in the second round. We will also have to deal with Thibault Garnier, candidate for the National Rally. Finally, Nadia Bouhami (LO) and Philippe Vieira (civil society) will also try to create a surprise.
