  • In Saint-Nazaire, the mayor, David Samzun, is a candidate for a second term.
  • Two of his former assistants are also at the top of the list.
  • The Socialist Party, The Republicans and The Republic on the march do not support any list on this commune.

Until May 29, 2019, the path seemed clear for the socialist David Samzun, mayor of Saint-Nazaire since 2014. Nothing seemed to be able to prevent his re-election. Since then, the municipal majority has exploded.

Financial assistant, Martin Arnout filed a defamation complaint against the first assistant, Laurianne Deniaud who accused her of sexual assault on another elected municipal councilor. The mayor supported his deputy, for whom no charge was ultimately brought by the courts.

The PS does not support anyone

Accusing the mayor of turning a blind eye to "a climate of ambient and oppressive sexism at the town hall", elected officials, including several deputies to the mayor, have left office. Two of them, Gaëlle Bénizé-Thual, granddaughter of the former mayor of Saint-Nazaire, Étienne Caux (1968-1983), and Pascale Hameau then decided to stand for municipal elections.

United against the outgoing mayor, however, they did not agree on a common program and decided to each build their list. That of Gaëlle Bénizé-Thual is supported by the Communist Party and Generations. S, the movement of Benoît Hamon. That of Pascale Hameau, by Europe Écologie Les Verts, France Insoumise or Place Publique.

After freezing the inauguration of David Samzun in August, the socialist party did not finally invest any candidate.

No candidate of the Republic in March

Six lists will appear before these three representatives of the former municipal majority. Gauthier Bouchet (National Rally), son of Christian Bouchet, head of the FN list in the municipal elections of Nantes in 2014, was one of the first to unveil himself with the project of doubling the strength of the municipal police and reducing the compensation for elected. "Safety is the priority of priorities for many Nazairiens", thinks the current elected RN at the municipal council.

The centrist Jean-Michel Texier, also a member of the opposition, and Julien Goussot, an unknown member of the local political scene, both, for a time, thought they had the support of the Republic on the move which finally decided ... support anyone. The two are candidates in the same way as Stéphane Gaschignard (various-right), the lawyer Denis Lambert (various-right) and Eddy Le Beller (Lutte Ouvrière).

A cable car between Saint-Marc-sur-Mer and the port

Security, transport, environment, housing are the key subjects of this election. In Saint-Nazaire, the next mayor will also have to decide on the future of several sites, that of the old hospital, fallow for years. years, and the port where the mayor finally gave up his marina, so as not to put the city's finances in the red. The construction of a 16-storey building near the sports complex is also questioned by several candidates.

Among its flagship measures, Gaëlle Bénizé-Thual offers free transport. If elected, the outgoing mayor will launch two new bus routes. More surprising, Stéphane Gaschignard imagines a gondola that could connect the port to Saint-Marc-sur-Mer.

One of the main measures of the environmentalist Pascale Hameau would be to put an end to the cumulation of mandates. If she is elected, it is number 2 on her list, Gwénolé Perrono who will take the head of Carene, the agglomeration community, currently chaired by the mayor of Saint-Nazaire. It will also remove video surveillance cameras and strengthen the mediation teams. For her, “technology cannot replace human presence. "
