Sea-Hi Famous Chinese Restaurant was originally run by a Chinese-American woman named Edna Chan. It opened as early as 1955. The original location of the restaurant was near the junction with Geddas Street, Bay Street, Chinatown, Toronto.

Edna Chan opened a second restaurant at its current location at 3645 Buttes Street in 1961, and closed a restaurant in Chinatown, Central, a year later. Stanley Chui bought the restaurant's business in 1977 and ran the restaurant with his family.

Many of the diners patronizing the Chinese restaurant are Jews. Former Toronto Mayor Lai Shimin is a regular customer. Other celebrities who frequent the restaurant include: former Finance Minister Robert Caplan, Citytv Television Mark Dailey and singer Alannah Myles. In 2017, a film by the award-winning filmmaker Colin Firth was filmed in the restaurant.

Many diners expressed their dissatisfaction and sadness through social media after learning that the store was about to close. A diner named Randy Brill said: "Originally Katz's Deli, now Sea-Hi, always supports independent restaurants, not chain restaurants."
